    The Birds-of-Paradise

Some of the many birds you can find, include the Birds-of-Paradise. These birds are one of the iconic symbols of Papua. Many Papuans believe these birds are the reincarnation of fairies flitting around their jungles. The Birds of Paradise are a family of 38 species of birds that are famous for their spectacular plumages. These birds range in length from 16 cm to 110 cm. You can find most species of Birds-of-Paradise on the island of New Guinea, or on smaller, nearby islands, as they require humid forest to live.

Raja Ampat Diphyllodes Bird of Paradise

Two of the rarest bird species

Raja Ampat islands are home to two endemics; the famous Red Bird-of-Paradise, Wilson’s Bird of Paradise. Most birders go to Raja Ampat to see the first two ones, but the main attraction by far is the Red Bird of Paradise, as they are very rare and this is one of the only places in the world where you can see these amazing birds. The Red Bird-of-Paradise is endemic to Batanta, Waigeo, and Gam Island.

    What about the Birds-of-Paradise?

Most Birds of Paradise eat insects and fruits, but mostly fruits. As they are more agile than other birds, they can reach more fruits that are difficult to access, which allows them to eat more types of them. In addition, their guts destroy the seeds less than other animals, so given the fact they are more likely to disperse the seeds from the parent plant than other birds, when they do it, the seeds are healthier. This process has converted them in very important dispersers of fruit seeds, making them a main part of the ecosystem to the forests of Raja Ampat. There are a number of fruit trees on the islands of Waigeo and Batanta that are thought to rely solely on seed dispersal by Birds of Paradise.

When courting the females, male Red Birds of Paradise perform a beautiful display with the early lights of the day. They get together in groups called leks and display together in steady postures, fanning and dancing with their brightly colored wings, plumes and tail tapes. Females observe the performance, and mate with one male. Not only are their colors and displays worth observing, but also some species produce unique sounds.

There are tours all year around to see these wonderful birds, being the best months from June to November.
