    Accessible for Divers & Snorkelers

Unlike other sites in the North area of the archipelago, this is a perfect place for beginner’s divers and snorkelers. The fact that the island is surrounded by a formation of corals plus being a relatively shallow site, makes it a very suitable spot for them. This beautiful reef will offer to new divers a great first impression of what they can expect to see in Raja Ampat.

    What you should expect:

The start of this relaxing dive should be done on the current side of the island, leaving a good distance between the entry point and the best point of the dive site on the south-eastern side. The slope down to the sandy plateau has much to see, you will encounter a great number of Yellowtail and Blue Lined Snappers, sweeping up and down the reef, Napoleon Wrasse and several big groupers. It is also very likely to see many Wobbegong sharks, this rare species is the king of camouflage and is endemic to the region. They will mostly be in the several bommies on the shallow plateau reef, waiting patiently for their prey. Stopping at around 12 meters’ depth, will give the chance to observe a wide variety of tropical and pelagic fish: fusiliers, jacks, moray eels, humpback parrot fish, pagoda fish.

As you come up towards the top of the reef at around 9 meters, you will see one of the highlights of the site, a giant clam, as its name suggests, is a very big and old clam. Next to this species on the coral rocks, there are few tiny pontohi seahorses, which after seeing the largest clam species on earth, will make the experience even more special. Better have a guide to point it out where to look. Other pygmy seahorses and different species of nudibranch can be seen as well.

    Tiger Mantis Shrimp

    More Fauna & beautiful Flora

Additional marine life that will amaze you too, are Jack, sweetlips, butterfly, angel, damselfish, batfish, parrot fish, surgeon fish among many others. This is a very popular site for seeing peacock mantis shrimp and on rare occasions divers can spot the blue ring octopus. Miokson can also be done as a night dive, when you will find a completely different set of critters like sponge crabs, walking sharks, harlequin shrimps and many other strange and amazing creatures.

Miokson is a superb site with numerous bommies densely covered in soft corals. Amongst these corals, there are staghorn and leather corals. There are also magnificent orange sea fans adorned with feathers and surrounded by anthias as well as a variety of hard corals, sponges and tunicates.

This site, with easy dive conditions, with a depth ranging from 2 to 25 meters, where you can lazily drift around the eastern side of the island, is one of the most beautiful dive sites in the region. It welcomes all levels of divers, therefore Miokson shouldn’t be missed out.
