Manta Ridge is one of the most popular dive sites in Raja Ampat region, when it comes to close encounters with mantas, as it is a cleaning station that attracts groups of them. It is located between Mansuar Island and Arborek Island, in the central part of the Raja Ampat archipelago. Mantas rays can be seen in the surroundings areas, but in the central region you will have more chances to spot them.
It is a reef slope which drops below than 40 meters, however Manta Ridge can be done as a shallow dive, since already at the depth of 6 meters it is possible to watch amazing Oceanic & Reef Mantas swimming around you. As the currents can be strong in Manta Ridge, you can use reef hooks to stay in the same spot and enjoy this magnificent show. It is perhaps the most reliable dive spot within the Raja Ampat marine protected area to see mantas, and see them in large numbers. You can witness these majestic marine animals moving to Manta Ridge, to be cleaned of small parasites with the help of black lip butterflyfish and other small fishes. They can do this in groups of 5 up to 30. Can you imagine seeing many Mantas in one dive? And sometimes so close to you that you will be able to feel the full force of their gigantic flapping wings. An amazing treat!
You will see the mantas being accompanied by other fish like cobias, remoras and golden trevallies. The mantas glide into the cleaning stations without any effort despite the very strong currents that are usually present. A unique feature about manta rays of Raja Ampat is that some of them are all black. This characteristic is quite unusual, given that most manta rays have a black upper side and a white underside.
Going down the reef you can find several bump head parrotfish crashing over the coral, as well as blacktip reef sharks in deeper water. You can often see yellow pilot fish swimming with the Mantas. Some other marine life of the site is moon wrasse, cleaner wrasse, spotted ray, leopard wrasse, black eye thick lips and lots of small fish. Turtles can be also spotted quite often on the reef. So, if you happen to see only a few Mantas, the dive can be just as breathtaking as you drift along the ridge and up onto the top flats where numerous different species can be seen. At the sandy bottom there can be seen secluded reef formations and bushes of algaes.
As mentioned before, Manta Ridge is prone to strong currents in all directions, down currents are frequent, particularly on ascent. Therefore, the site is for experienced divers only and a reef hook and confidence are an absolute must.
The water temperature is almost constant of 29 Celsius degrees. Although it is possible to dive at Manta Ridge all the year through, during the months of October till April is when the mantas come to feed at this famous cleaning station.

Open water certified divers or equivalent will have access to most of the dive sites, but to make the best of the cruise Advanced level and experience in drift dive is recommended. You can spend a few days with us in Bali before starting your cruise, by joining our Safari tour or to get your Advanced certification in one of our four dive centers, it will allow you to dive up to 30m depth, to join night dives and be more confident and comfortable while drift diving.
For an even better training we recommend you to join the drift specialty in Nusa Lembongan.
