Why is the beach sand this red or pink?

This exceptional beach gets its remarkable color from tiny marine creatures, with red outer casings, called Foraminifera, which produce a red pigment on the coral reefs. This is why locals call this place Red Beach (Pantai Merah). When the corals are destroyed, the tiny fragments of red coral are sent by the waves to the coast, they combine with the white sands and this produces the soft pink color that is visible along the shoreline. Besides Pink Beach, a few small parts along Komodo’s eastern bay also have a pinkish tint.

Why Pink Beach Sand is Pink

Activities to enjoy at Pink Beach

A visit to this beach is very recommendable, not only to witness the scenery of the pink sand, contrasted with a bright blue sky and clear crystal water, but also to simply relax in the soft sand and beautiful beaches or enjoy swimming in the turquoise water or have a great time kayaking around. If photography is your passion, this is definitely a place to capture the extraordinary natural beauty of the landscape.

Snorkelling or diving are activities that should not be missed on this island. The marine life that this island offers is beautiful, including many species of fish, hundreds of species of coral and many sponges.

How to reach this majestic place?

Because it is quite an isolated and uninhabited beach and also due to its remote location and lack of infrastructure, pink beach is not suitable to stay overnight. It is a lovely boat journey with spectacular scenery all around.

You can choose to dock straight on Pink Beach, or if you are interested in trekking through cliffs and mangroves you could dock on a different side of the island, and start walking this four hours’ trek to the beach.

In order to not damage the underwater coral reefs with ships, once getting to Pink Beach, tourists can reach it by jumping directly into the water and swim to the shoreline or by taking a small boat ride.
