    Topography & Fauna

Tatawa Besar is an easy drift in shallow waters, it is a fun drift over a colorful underwater landscape for hundreds of meters. Although the long continuous sloping reef reaches depths of 25 meters, it is not necessary to dive deep, as the marine life is concentrated between 5 meters and 18 meters’ depth. In this eye-catching site, some of the coral gardens can be visible near the surface, making snorkeling in Tatawa Besar a sublime experience.

It is very likely to dive along giant trevallies, massive barracudas, reef fish, parrot fishes, white and black tip reef sharks, napoleon wrasses, batfish, cuttlefish, oriental sweetlips, eagle rays, and a large school of fusiliers while you drift along the currents. You will also enjoy the sight of Manta Rays and if you are lucky even the possibility of encountering dolphins can be an option. When the current dies down, the corner of the island is home to amazing hard corals, where hawksbill turtles and thousands of schooling fish can be spotted.

    Macro or Drift Dive

Tatawa Besar is in addition a famous spot for macro-photography. When diving with no current, you will do it among boulders, tube sponges and sea fans, the perfect places to find all manner of macro delights, such as nudibranchs, leafy scorpionfish, shrimps, orangutan crabs, frogfish, candy crabs, hairy shrimps.

As other sites that have these two types of diving, it is really worth it to do more than one dive here. As we said, Tatawa Besar, under perfect currents, can be an excellent drift dive, over extraordinary underwater landscape, surrounded by vibrant fringing reef. It can be an excellent alternative if currents are too strong in other sites of Komodo National Park, like Tata Kecil or Batu Bolong. And at the same time, if you like looking for tiny critters, this will be a perfect fit as well. One way or the other, missing out on Tatawa Besar’s colorful landscapes would be a big mistake.

You can dive Tatawa Besar all year long, being the best time of the year to do it, from April to November.
