A current that brings an abundant marine life

Why, you may wonder. These currents bring in nutrients that feed many species that wouldn’t be here without this food. This is how the chain works: the most important source of food for corals and small fish is plankton, then these small fish attract predators like sharks and other hunters like Giant Trevalies, Tunas, Snappers, Barracudas, etc. Plankton also attracts even bigger and peaceful creatures as well, such as massive Manta rays and even the largest of all, the Whale sharks.

    A drifting adventure

The diving here can be pretty adventurous, which is definitely one the main attractions while diving in Komodo National Park, captivating many divers from all over the world. Currents are frequent on most dives and they can dramatically change from day to day, from hour to hour, and even during a single dive. But as we mentioned, these currents are what make this area special and so rich in life. The strength of the current also varies throughout the month along with the lunar cycle, thus the knowledge of currents, daily tide times and moon phases will determine where the best diving will be.

If you wish to experience current and drift dive before your trip to Komodo, we highly recommend you to spend a couple of days with us in Nusa Lembongan, to dive Nusa Penida North coast, and get your drift specialty. Current here is weaker but strong enough to give the required experience to dive some of the best dive sites in Komodo.

    For every level

Due to the potential changing currents, diving in Komodo can be challenging sometimes, therefore is mostly for intermediate - advanced divers, however beginner divers don’t need to worry at all, considering there are also diving spots with less or none current, a variety of dive sites are done in protected and sheltered places. For example, there are some dives sites like Manta Point and Tatawa Besar, where if conditions are right, beginner divers and Open Water students can enjoy the marvels of these places.  On the other hand, there are some dives sites, such as The Cauldron, Castle Rock and Crystal Rock, which are only appropriate for advanced divers.

How to deal with the current?

The idea is not to fight the current, diving should be fun, so better is drift along and go with the flow! The feeling of flying underwater is simply stunning and it will surely be one of the most remarkable experiences that Komodo has to offer! It is good to keep in mind though that unexpected changes can still occur, so please pay attention carefully to the pre-dive briefing. Always be close to your group and behind your guide. If there is current present, stay close to the reef or bottom where the current is less strong while maintaining neutral buoyancy, without damaging any marine life, and imitate your dive guide’s positioning in the water. And for underwater photographers in strong currents, it is important not to get left behind in the group in search of the perfect shot.

For those who are not that big fans of currents, Komodo National Park will also be a great fit, due to its extensive types of dives. Divers will find everything they are looking for: currents dive, but easy dives as well, protected bays, colourful reefs; great night dives, pinnacles and sea mounts; white sand slopes & colorful walls, monumental boulders, volcanic black sands, great much diving, and all of it filled with a breathtaking marine life biodiversity…

Whereas diving in some sites in the Park can be easily done all year round, in North and Central Komodo National Park the best time for diving is from April to November and in South Komodo National Park the best time is from October till April.
