Rinca Island

Discover Rinca Island and its species from another time

Rinca Komodo Dragon
  • The home to the Komodo Dragons

Rinca Island is the second largest island of the Komodo National Park. Along with Komodo island and Padar island and holds the UNESCO World Heritage status since 1991. It is home for the mighty Komodo dragon; you can find about 2000 of these giant lizards. It is a great place to see Komodo dragons of all ages, in their natural habitats, and in various places. You’re pretty much guaranteed to see dragons here for a few reasons: the density of the population, there is less cover for the dragons to shelter under and there are fewer tourists around than other islands, to disturb them.

Things to do on Rinca Island

There are different routes to explore Rinca Island. Each of them offers a distinct attraction. One is a 30-minute easy trek along a shaded path; second one is a 1-hour medium level trek around dragon nests, where lizards may lay some eggs, and exposed Savannah. A third one is a difficult one, of 2 hours covering dragons, permanent waterholes, steep and exposed slopes with spectacular views. It is mandatory to have a ranger or guide with you, during your time on Rinca Island. As long as you follow the ranger's instructions and not wander around alone, you will be safe. Remember not to bring food.

The most preserved island of Komodo

Aside of the dragons, Rinca Island is also abounding with local wildlife including macaques, buffaloes, boars, snakes, deer, birds and pigs. The fauna in Rinca Island is very rich and few tourists come here, which allows you to discover these animals without disturbance.

The island also offers stunning beaches and is a great place to snorkel and scuba diving given its teeming underwater life. You will find dozens of very pristine dive sites, with many migratory species, making it one of the world’s richest marine habitats.

Even if Rinca Island is inhabited by a few locals, tourists are not allowed to stay on the island.
