Manta Rays in Komodo

Enjoy the majestic Mantas of the Komodo National Park

Manta Ray in Komodo National Park
  • A Manta Rays' Sanctuary

There is no doubt that one of the main attractions of Komodo National Park are the majestic Manta Rays. Komodo National Park is one of the largest sanctuaries for Manta Rays and one of the few places where it is possible to encounter this beautiful species. Here you will find the perfect place to encounter Manta Rays at their real habitat, either diving or snorkeling.

One of the most common dreams of divers is to have an encounter with these sublime manta rays, being side by side with them. This dream can definitely come true in Komodo National Park, especially because despite what people may think, manta rays are not dangerous at all. Although they are quite big and have a tail like stingrays, manta rays do not have a poisonous sting and they are not aggressive at all. They are known for being quiet, peaceful and having a curious behavior, approaching divers, putting on impressive acrobatic shows.

Best dive sites to see the Mantas

The best places to see Manta Rays in Komodo National Park are Makassar Reef also called Manta Point and Manta Alley, although you still can see them in other dive sites. These two are shallow drift dives, great to see Manta Rays at their cleaning stations for the removal of parasites. They are fantastic places to dive throughout the year. You can even see the mantas easily from the boat before you jump into the water. The best time to catch sight of Manta Rays here is when the tide is rising. During the Best Season for Manta Diving it’s possible to see up to 50 mantas on the same spot, displaying mating and feeding trains. It is a thrilling experience to witness this magnificent creature gliding and performing their graceful dance above your head. The best approach is to quietly watch their incredible display from the bottom of the reef and not to chase after them; especially not touching them, nor disturbing them. The best time for manta sightings is December to March, although they are seen all year round.

    About this mythic species

The manta is the world’s largest ray. It is closely related to stingrays, with its flattened body and long tail, and to sharks for their cartilaginous skeletons. There are only two types of Manta Rays: The ones you find in Komodo, Reef Mantas, with an average width of 5 meters and the Giant Manta, with and average width of 7 meters. Although these two species have different features and characteristics, they share the same diamond-shape body and wing-like pectoral fins, laterally placed eyes, and wide frontal mouths.

Mantas are a pelagic species, and can be found in temperate, subtropical and tropical shallower waters. These animals are surprisingly smart, they have the largest brain of all fish, with especially developed areas for learning, problem solving and communicating. They are filter feeders and eat large quantities of zooplankton, which they swallow with their open mouths as they swim. Their average lifespan in the wild is over 20 years. A fun fact about them is that they have personal identifying spots under their bellies, much like our fingerprints.

    Manta Ray Snorkeling Komodo

    An endangered species

Manta ray’s population is rapidly decreasing on a global scale. Its biggest threats are overfishing, entanglement in fishing nets, water pollution and climate change. Their slow reproductive rate exacerbates these threats, making it very unlikely that manta rays will recover, especially in unprotected areas, manta rays give birth to a single pup every two to five years and their gestation period is around one-year long. Manta rays are protected in international waters by the Convention on Migratory Species of Wild Animals, but are more vulnerable closer to shore.
