Raja Ampat Fam Islands
  • Three islands' clusters

Fam islands (or Pam islands correctly pronounced) are a group of islands in the Raja Ampat archipelago with such a beauty comparable to stunning Wayag. They are located further West in the Pacific and are removed from the rest of the Raja Ampat islands. They can be divided into three island clusters; the Piaynemo islands, Pam (Fam) and surrounding islands, and the Bamboo islands. These islands, scattered at the Western end of the Dampier Strait, will blow your mind with incredible dives, deserted beaches, towering rock formations, and crystal clear lagoons.

Fam Islands: Amazing marine & on land features

Some of the highlights of these islands include the wonderful Piaynemo island, with its amazing dive and breathtaking view point, and Rufus island with its lagoon. With the exception of Piaynemo, almost all of the islands are small, low sand cays that are densely populated with coconut palms. You will find in this area, the most spectacular beaches in Raja Ampat with amazingly clear turquoise and azure water.

    Rufus Island Raja Ampat

    Lagoons & Coral Reefs

The Fam Islands group contains some of the most stunning coral reefs in Raja Ampat. The calm water, the abundance of marine life with some of the highest diversity of reef fish species known in Raja Ampat and pristine and colorful coral, attract divers from all over the world. The range of what you can see is endless, from larger predatory species such as sharks and tuna to brightly colored reef fish such as anthers and damsels, to tiny critters like different species of pygmy seahorses or even centuries old Tridacna Clams mingling amongst a tangle of soft and hard coral.

Just to have an idea of some of the great dive sites in the area, we can say that Melissa’s Garden for example, is considered one of the oldest and most pristine and diverse coral reefs in Raja Ampat. With such intense colors and tons of small marine life, this site is a paradise for underwater macro photographers. There is also Rufus dive site, a beautiful wall dive, where the wall is covered with soft and hard corals, sea fans and giant barrel sponges. The site features a limestone formation fringed by coral reef and a lagoon inside. And in Anita's Garden dive site, you will find some unique marine life.

In deeper waters sea snakes, barracudas, rabbitfish and even wobbegong sharks are seen. Macro lovers will have their own feast with plenty of pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, crabs, shrimps, octopuses, ghost pipefish, and mushroom coral pipefish and more. The waters surrounding the Fam Islands are also an important habitat for iconic species such as sharks, Napoleon fish, two types of turtles, both species of manta ray and marine mammals such as whales and dolphins. Dugongs and whale sharks have also been spotted.
