Wayag Raja Ampat
  • Regroups 50 karst islands

Wayag Island is one of the many outstanding islands within the Raja Ampat district. It is located Northwest of Waigeo and with over 50 karst islands around Wayag, you could say this part of the archipelago epitomizes Raja Ampat, the reason why it is sometimes called the icon of Raja Ampat. In every tourism promotion about Raja Ampat, you will see a picture of the islands and their surroundings. The island is known for its beautiful atolls and amazing underwater life. Wayag’s nature also includes narrow channels and inlets, peculiar caves, sandy beaches, series of coves and lagoons, and jagged rocks capped by orchid-festooned jungle. It is another secluded island, with a peaceful environment.

Wayag offers wonderfull dive sites in Raja Ampat, with an excellent visibility and crystal clear waters, ideal to soak in the fairy tale scenery you will observe with all the various types of flora and fauna that live underwater. No wonder why diving is the most popular activity on the island.

When diving, you will be overwhelmed by the rich underwater displays. Hiking

Another mind-blowing activity to do is to climb Pindito peak, located in the heart of Wayag. Be ready to have your breath taken away by the extraordinary views across the whole Raja Ampat. Observe the atolls and coves around, with green-blue sea that is fringed by turquoise lagoons. It might not be an easy hike; it is about a 30 minutes’ steep climb, however, the view is worth the effort.

Wayag Islands a Paradise on Earth

    Underwater or Inland

Without a doubt, Wayag island offers unspeakable beauty both above the water and below. Some claim the island has the best landscape for photography. Relaxing is also an option, if you need a break from your adventures, you can go for a walk to some of the pristine and undisturbed beaches that Wayag features. Visitors can even walk on foot around most of the small islands that make up Wayag archipelago. In other words, this island is the perfect spot for snorkeling, swimming, diving, hiking, and relaxing.

    Paddling Between Wayag Karst Islands

How to reach this remote paradise?

Wayag islands are so remote, so no one lives on these islands. Liveaboards or chartering a private yacht are the most popular ways to visit this spectacular group of Raja Ampat islands. Liveaboard packages are a more comfortable alternative, with different ranges of prices. They may be the best alternative considering time and convenience. Liveaboards usually run 10 day cruises out of the port of Sorong, in West Papua.

You can also get to Wayag island from other islands in the archipelago, however Sorong is always the entry point and the nearest city to Raja Ampat.
