The icon of Raja Ampat

Wayag Raja Ampat

Regroups 50 karst islands

Wayag Island is one of the many outstanding islands within the Raja Ampat district. It is located Northwest of Waigeo and with over 50 karst islands around Wayag, you could say this part of the archipelago epitomizes Raja Ampat, the reason why it is sometimes called the icon of Raja Ampat. In every tourism promotion about Raja Ampat, you will see a picture of the islands and their surroundings. The island is known for its beautiful atolls and amazing underwater life. Wayag’s nature also includes narrow channels and inlets, peculiar caves, sandy beaches, series of coves and lagoons, and jagged rocks capped by orchid-festooned jungle. It is another secluded island, with a peaceful environment.

We will start with diving on the East side of the passage at Blue Magic which is an incredible dive site and the best to start your dive liveaboard. In the afternoon, we will go diving to Sardine Reef and Kap Kri where we will have the chance to see some big pelagic! At the end of the day, we will drop the anchor in Yenbuba bay where we might have the time to take a small walk in the streets of this authentic village toward the church.

The small village of Saundarek is located on this island but it does not change the fact that this is one of the most abundant area in marine life. We will go diving in the waters from this village and discover the Napoleon wrasse, barracudas and reefs sharks that swim in the area… Later, we will have few opportunities and will decide the dive sites according to the conditions but the idea is either to go diving with Manta rays at Manta Ridge, in the incredible Coral Garden of Mayhem or in Cytrus or Yeben Kecil… Many wonderful dive sites full of diversity. At the end of the day, we will have a tasty BBQ party on Yeben beach!

Day 4 : Pianemo Island

Early in the morning, we will arrive at Pianemo and go dive on its famous Reef where you will enjoy one of the largest populations of pelagic in the area. After breakfast, we will go dive on Melissa’s Garden, the most well-known site in the region, famous for its impressive and healthy hard coral reefs. Then, we will dive in Galaxy dive site which offer a large reef with abundant marine life. In the afternoon after your third dive, we will take you to Penemu Island where you can walk up to the famous viewpoint above Pianemo’s star-shaped lagoons. You will also have time to kayak and paddleboard amongst the incredible karst limestone landscape before sunset, dinner and night on board.

Day 5 : Wayag archipelago

Early morning, we planned to do a small trekking to the top of mount Pindito where an astonishing view is waiting for you, probably the best panorama you ever seen… After that, we will organize a dive in the waters next to this island where diversity is optimum. In the afternoon, we will go cruising between the islets with the speed boat and you will be offered to go diving, kayaking or paddling around this wonderful area. Few viewpoints are not to be missed!

Day 6 : Wohof Island

We will drop the anchor in front of this paradisiac island where white sand beach meets walls and stunning corals. Wayag offers wonderfull dive sites in Raja Ampat, with an excellent visibility and crystal clear waters, ideal to soak in the fairy tale scenery you will observe with all the various types of flora and fauna that live underwater. No wonder why diving is the most popular activity on the island.

When diving, you will be overwhelmed by the rich underwater displays. You will encounter majestic eagle rays circling the islands, along with sweetlips, barracudas, wobbegong sharks, reef sharks, tunas, sardines, bump head parrotfish, the occasional manta rays and many more. Stunning corals, with different colors and shapes, are also part of this underwater picturesque scenery. Underwater photographers will be delighted with the great memories they will take home. And there are also some sites with little to no current, perfect for novice divers and snorkelers.

Another mind-blowing activity to do is to climb Pindito peak, located in the heart of Wayag. Be ready to have your breath taken away by the extraordinary views across the whole Raja Ampat. Observe the atolls and coves around, with green-blue sea that is fringed by turquoise lagoons. It might not be an easy hike; it is about a 30 minutes’ steep climb, however, the view is worth the effort.

Paddling Between Wayag Karst Islands

How to reach this remote paradise?

Wayag islands are so remote, so no one lives on these islands. Liveaboards or chartering a private yacht are the most popular ways to visit this spectacular group of Raja Ampat islands. Liveaboard packages are a more comfortable alternative, with different ranges of prices. They may be the best alternative considering time and convenience. Liveaboards usually run 10 day cruises out of the port of Sorong, in West Papua.

You can also get to Wayag island from other islands in the archipelago, however Sorong is always the entry point and the nearest city to Raja Ampat.
