Liveaboard Banda Sea & Raja Ampat

Day 1 : Ambon - Suanggi

The boat and its crew will be waiting for you in Ambon! The crew will pick you up at the airport and take you to the harbor, the trip is about to begin! Once on the boat, you will be offered a refreshing welcome drink, a mocktail and sit back in the lounge area where the captain will do a quick general briefing while the crew lift the anchor. Then, you will do your check-in, crew & boat presentations before having your first night onboard while cruising to Pulau Suanggi.

Day 2 : Suanggi Island - Banda islands

As you wake up, the boat has now arrived at its destination! Lost north of the Banda Sea, Suanggi Island is an oasis for pelagic fish and has an amazingly beautiful coral reef. Tuna, moray eels, schools of fish of all colors and of course, schools of hammerhead sharks can be seen at these dive sites. Pulau Suanggi is a unique diving spot because of its geographical location but also by the diversity of its topography and the incredible richness of its micro-ecosystem.
You will make 2 deep dives on pinnacles to try to swim with hammerhead sharks. In the afternoon, you will dive along an underwater ridge, with untouched bottoms, the idea is to not miss anything of this majestic place. As the sun sets, you will immerse yourself one last time when all the predators are out. Depending on the conditions, the vessel will resume its journey towards the heart of the Banda islands at the end of the day or very early in the morning. Approximately 3 hours of navigation separate us from our next place of leisure.

Day 3 : Hatta Island

Explore Karang Hatta reef and Hatta Island: the dive sites that border this reef sink to nearly 6000m deep and give birth to vertiginous walls open to the ocean! Here, the chances of encountering pelagic poisons, such as tunas, king mackerels, wahoos and large barracudas are very high! Gray sharks and hammerhead sharks can also be seen around these unique dive sites.
You will do 2 dives at Karang Hatta before approaching Pulau Hatta. In the West of the island awaits you an incredible dive during which you will sink through a hole of 5m diameter, surrounded by corals and multicolored fish. Get up close to the large gorgonians that line its edges and are home to pygmy seahorses. End your dive in a coral garden and re-recharge your batteries before the evening. At the end of the day, we will anchor in the bay in front of Banda Besar and we will offer you a dive of your choice: watch the dance of the Mandarin fish at sunset. At the foot of one of the oldest hotels on the island resides a population of Mandarin fish. The Mandarin made its reputation by its incredible display of colors and by its nuptial dance which combines grace and modesty. A silent immersion and a certain discretion will then give you the opportunity to observe one of the stars of underwater photography Night dive. While the majority of people seek to appreciate the beauty of mandarin fish, wait until nightfall and seek out the "macro" critters of the Banda Besar ! Blue-ringed octopus, toad fish, ghost fish and other wonders await you among the seaweed and black sands of this dive site.

Day 4 : Travel the history of the Bandas'

We can customize the day according to your preferences and what you would like to see but the plan is to go diving in the morning in the North of Banda Besar.
2 dives are part of the program: Batu Kapal which literally means Rock Boat, named after its shape. This island has a dive site where life is at its profusion. Start at the top of a pinnacle where hard and soft corals such as gorgonians grow and around which myriads of fish roam. Don't forget to take a look in the blue where a school of resident tunas pass by regularly. You will then join the fringing reef of the emerged part on site. Monumental sized sponges, large cloud morays, leaf fish and pygmy seahorses inhabit the area. The second dive will take place at the Northeastern tip of Banda Besar Island at the dive site Pohon Miring which means "Leaning tree". Below the surface, a huge crack in the reef creates a unique tunnel through which you will drift to a wall covered with corals and sponges. The inner reef of the tunnel and the outer reef are teeming with life and teeming with color. Trevally, reef sharks, moray eels, humpback parrots, eagle rays and unicorns are present.

During this afternoon, you will be offered to set foot on Banda Neira Island to take a step back in history, through the streets and old buildings of Banda Neira. Take a guided tour of the site to retrace the astonishing history of the Banda Islands and the spice trade. Notably famous for nutmeg, the Banda Islands were the scene of unrelenting conflicts and trade agreements during the 17th and 18th centuries. Admire a hotel with Portuguese architecture, walking the streets and past the former homes of English generals. Visit the fort Belgica built by the Dutch in 1611 and from the top of which the view of the active volcano Gunung Api, 650m high, is breathtaking! Shop for cloves, almonds and nutmeg in what was once the world's heart of the spice trade!

Huge diversity of Pelagic

The reason why Blue Magic is so popular among divers, is because it features lots of pelagic fish. The name of the site comes from the clear blue waters around the pinnacle and the magic of diving in a site with such a large number of pelagic fish. Most of these fish gather at this dive site either to feed or to be cleaned, as there are several cleaning stations, a display that can be regularly observed by divers.

The biodiversity of Blue Magic is quite large, so divers should look out for the many different species that can be found. The pelagic fish include many different species of jack fish, the most common type of fish seen in the site, often swimming together near the surface, as well as tuna and oceanic Manta Rays swimming out in the deep blue. Grey reef sharks are also frequent here, along with white tip reef sharks and black tip reef sharks.

Giant Oceanic Manta in Blue Magic

More Pelagic & also some Macro

As you descend deeper, it is common to come across bighead trevallies, dog-toothed tunas, large schools of sweetlips, wobbegong sharks and swirling schools of hunting barracudas. Other fish you will spot are butterfly fish, snapper, fusilier wrasse, Spanish Mackerel, triggerfish, eels, bump head parrots, groupers, damselfish and many more. Under every overhang you’ll find surgeons, squirrelfish and soldier fish hiding.

There are plenty of places to get down low and look for the small stuff too, on the top of the pinnacle are all kinds of nudibranchs hiding in the reef, pygmy seahorses, crabs, octopus, shrimps, flatworms and scorpion fish. Along the slopes and onto the reef top are a variety of fans, sponges and soft and hard corals. Large coral heads provide protection for more reclusive reef inhabitants.

Yellow Bargibanti Pygmy Seahorse

Kind of dive & weather conditions

Different types of fishes and corals are waiting to be found, but as can be expected with pelagic fish dive sites, the currents are a little bit strong, which can make it a bit challenging reaching further. At the lower parts of the dive, the current is not as strong though, however it is still recommended for more experienced divers and an advanced level is advised.

Visibility is normally above 15 meters and can reach a maximum of 30 meters. You can enjoy this must-dive in Raja Ampat all year round, because the water temperature ranges from 28 to 30 Celsius degrees, providing comfortable diving conditions throughout the year. Having said that, the high season is from October through April, when blooming plankton brings more pelagic fish.
