Siaba Besar

The heaven for snorkelers

Dive Site Siaba Besar Turtle City Komodo
  • Also called Turtle City

Siaba Besar is a beautiful island in the central part of the Komodo National Park. There are 2 Siaba islands next to each other, and as its name suggests, Siaba Besar is the big one of these two Siaba islands: besar means big in local language.

The highlight of this island is with no doubt, the stunning snorkel and dive that can be done. Siaba Besar dive site is a sheltered bay with coral seamounts and amazing coral reefs, located in the North-West side of the island. The reef is 4-6 meters deep with healthy corals and sand patches around. It has a massive coral garden and lacks strong currents, but it does not mean it lacks cool sights and marine life, just the opposite! This feature makes Siaba Besar a suitable dive site for any kind of level, being the best place for those who have never dived and want to try this amazing experience in Komodo National Park. Siaba Besar is heaven for snorkelers, given its easy conditions with shallow coral reefs, very little current and abundant marine life. A superlative snorkeling among sea turtles it is guaranteed, which gives the nickname to this site: Turtle City

    What other species to expect?

Besides being a home to large numbers of green turtles, you will also find a diverse amount of marine life, due to Siaba Besar Island has two quite different parts: one of the most impressive coral gardens and a sandy bottom which hides an endless amount of macro marine life. Given this especial characteristic, Siaba Besar is a site that should be dived more than once. There is something for every diver and every level in this dive site.

The beautiful reef is the perfect area for beginner’s divers, where you will find hawksbill turtles, white tip reef sharks, blue spotted stingrays, oriental sweetlips, big eye soldierfishes, unicorn fishes, flounders, pufferfish, flying gurnard.  On the other hand, the phenomenal muck dive, home to some of the best macro in the park, is a better fit for advanced divers, where the real ‘treasure hunting’ begins. You can spot shrimps, frogfish, hairy frog fishes, flamboyant cuttlefish, seahorses ghostpipefishes, stone fish, crabs, banded pipefishes, indian walkers, rhinopias and even mimic octopus and rhinopias have been seen here.
