Batu Bolong Komodo Dive Site
  • A world-class dive site

Batu Bolong is known for being one of the most spectacular dive sites in Komodo National Park and has been ranked amongst the top 10 best dive sites in the world. It is located between Tatawa Kecil and Komodo Island. This site is an exposed rock pinnacle with strong currents hitting the rock on one side or the other depending on the tide. The top of the rock rises out of the ocean and it is enough to provide a protected lee, where the site is commonly dived.

Topography and species of this site:

The reef is in great condition, you can observe the undamaged and genuine underwater scenery.

The top of the Batu Bolong reef is covered with colourful hard corals, whilst the walls and slopes are covered by large sponges. You will dive in a mixture of wall and steep reef. The pinnacle disappears into the deep, which makes perfect dives between 18 to 30 meters. While you descend down the pinnacle, you will be blown away by the stunning array of colors. Strong currents around Batu Bolong ensure an awesome volume of fish, so the marine life you can find in here is endless and mind-blowing: thousands of reef fishes living in the coral gardens, large fish like sharks, mantas, turtles, some pelagic fishes like napoleon wrasse, giant trevally, dogtooth tuna. You can also find white tip reef sharks, schools of fusiliers and surgeons, giant sweetlips at cleaning stations, huge moray eels, barracudas and tuna all playing in the current lines. The great macro can be spotted at this site too, being perfect for photographers. Some species you will see are: pygmy seahorses, crazy nudibranchs, tiny orangutan crabs and more. Diving Batu Bolong is always an adventure, a new experience, it's easy to just stay in one spot for the whole dive and watch the fish life surround you, you will find it hard to finish the dive, and will want to go back for more!

Plan your dive : watch the tide

Due to the strong currents you will find in Batu Bolong, this site has to be dived at a specific time, and the side where the dive will be, will depend completely on the tide. But the currents that protect this area also make this dive spot a haven for advanced divers. You would always dive in the lee side of the current. To assure a safe and still adventurous dive you would enter the dive site in the middle between the current edges (the safe zone) and dive straight down to your preferred depth, usually around 20 meters. However, there is no need to dive deep as there are plenty of tropical fish even at the surface, making this site a great place for snorkelers as well.

You can dive Batu Bolong all year long, and since it is one the most impressive dive you can do in Komodo National Park, no diving trip in Komodo is complete without a visit to Batu Bolong.
