Mawan

An idyllic small island

Mawan komodo
  • A wonderful underwater environment

Mawan is an idyllic small island in central Komodo National Park, relatively close to Siaba Besar on the West side, with a spectacular underwater landscape full of life, offering pleasant and unexpected surprises. It is a laid back, yet stunning island. It has a very relaxed atmosphere, where the main attractions are snorkeling / diving and trekking. Mawan is covered in grasslands, where you can hike at your own pace, snorkel without going in too deep or climb without going up too high, but still be able to see the neighboring island on the horizon. There are beautiful treks in this island, suitable for everyone, since there are no steep hills, but this doesn’t mean that the views from the hills are less spectacular. Just a short trek and you are at the summit. When it comes to the beach, Mawan Island has dazzling white and soft sand, easy to walk barefoot, without worrying about stepping on corals or rocks. The water is calm and crystal clear and there are plenty of beautiful corals and marine creatures to spot. You will see hard and soft corals, small sea fans, colorful sponges and anemones.

    Species & type of dives?

As a dive destination, this incredible dive site reflects the whole marine park in one site, since you will see mantas, sharks, an abundance of reef fish and macro life. The underwater beauty is breathtaking. It has a steep sandy slope, with coral gardens and fringing reef. It is a drift dive, and one of the best sites to spot Manta Rays, since Mawan is a cleaning station for these majestic animals, therefore is here where you can have hour long dives watching these distinguished rays glide and play in the water.

It's not just Mantas that can be seen here, this is a great site for stingrays, eagles rays, bamboo sharks, white tip and black tip sharks, leaf cuttlefish, scorpion fish, ribbon eels, unicorn fish, hawksbill turtles. Mawan is also great for ‘muck dives’ being a real treasure of macro marine life, where you will find many kinds of nudibranchs, octopus, hairy shrimps, peacock mantis shrimps, frog fish, orangutan crabs and more. Photographers will be delighted with these underwater wonders.

    For all levels

The depths of this site vary, being the maximum depth 30 meters. It is generally quite a shallow drift dive, around 12 meters approximately, but can be dived to 24 meters if current allows on the steep sandy area. Mawan is suitable for all levels of divers, beginners and experts.

Mawan is a secluded island, which means, there are no hotels or accommodation on this island.  As other dive sites, Mawan is a must-see when visiting Komodo National Park. Since there are only a few islands near Labuan Bajo, you can also explore nearby attractions such as Rinca island, Padar island or Komodo island.

The best time of the year to dive in this marvelous site is from April until November.
