One of the main attractions in this part of the world is scuba diving as well as snorkeling, with an unbelievable amount of marine life. Very good snorkeling can be found near the beaches of Wasai, but even better places are in West Waigeo, since that part of the island is more uninhabited, therefore it is unlikely to run into other day travelers. You will dive with thousands of colorful fish and stunning coral reefs, white tip reef sharks as well as the black tip reef sharks, a huge variety of nudibranch species, sea dragons, blue-striped flagtail pipefish, pygmy sea horses, green sea turtles, giant napoleon wrasse, and Indian lionfish and many small fish living in corals and sea fans. This beautiful island is also an excellent place for underwater photography, due to its bio-diversity and exotic sea creatures.
Travel inland is also a smart decision. You will see several authentic villages, ancient cultural sites, and you will be able to experience unbelievable fully supported trekking routes through the jungle. Waigeo is covered with lush tropical forests rich in birdlife, it is home to the Red Birds of Paradise and the iconic Wilson Birds of Paradise, together with unique mammals like the Waigeo Cuscus, opossums, snakes, tortoises, frilled and giant monitor lizards, plumed herons, honeyeaters and fascinating insects, reptiles and plant species.
