The 3 changing colors lakes and their myths

This mountain has three crater lakes at the summit. These lakes are known as the Three Color Lakes because they have three different colors, which always vary from each other and also at different times. This distinctive characteristic makes this mountain a surreal and exciting place to be discovered. These volcanic lakes that are situated 1,690 m above sea. The first and second lake are located next to each other while the third one is located 1.5km West of the two.

Despite ever-changing colours and the varying colours amongst themselves, each lake has a usual tone: the westernmost lake, Tiwu ata Mbupu (Lake of Old People) is usually blue. Lake Tiwu Nuwa Muri Koo Fai (Lake of Young Men and Maidens) is typically green, and Tiwu Ata Polo (Bewitched or Enchanted Lake) is usually red. The two last ones are only separated by a crater wall. Local residents around Lake Kelimutu consider the lakes as a resting place for the departed souls. Mae, a god of the afterlife, will send those who died to different lakes depending on their merits in life. (Hence the lake's names). They believe that when the lake changes color, they must give offerings to the spirits of people who have died.

Best time to visit this fairy place?

To make the best out of this fairy experience, you will have to catch the sunrise at Mount Kelimutu, with the most dramatic atmosphere. After you soak up the astonishing picture of the three colorful crater lakes in the sunshine, you can hike around the volcano before going back. The journey to the Kelimutu summit can be a bit tiring because of the fairly steep path but it is possible to climb up without a guide.

The best time to visit the Kelimutu Lakes is during the dry season, which is May to September. The best months are July and August, when they will also be more crowded but you are likely to have clearer weather.
