Where to see this amazing species?

This great pelagic species records most of its worldwide population in the Indo-Pacific Ocean, for as much as 75% of its whole population. However, we also have big communities of Whale Sharks in Atlantic and South Africa areas. This huge animal lives between 1.900 meters deep and the surface, in tropical waters of at least 21°C temperature. In Indonesia, you can approach and dive with this amazing species in many places, including Bali, when the season comes it's not rare to encounter Whale Shark in Menjangan, Tulamben, and Nusa Lembongan, for sure you have to be in the right spot at the right time. But in a few specific spots such as Triton Bay, Cendrawasih Bay and Sumbawa islands you'll have the highest opportunity to see Whale Sharks. If diving with Whale Shark is on your bucket list, please have a look to our Triton Bay Cruise and Cendrawasih Cruise!

    Where to see Whale Shark

    Lifestyle habits

Even though it is member of the shark family, the Whale Shark feeds exclusively on plankton and small fishes and pose no threat to humans. This marine animal has a very large mouth composed of 300 rows of tiny teeth and 20 filter pads that allows him to filter its food, the unwanted catch is expelled through the gills. A Whale Shark can eat up to 20 Kg of Plankton per day.
It is also known as being a migratory species which organize seasonal feeding and breeding aggregations in several coastal sites in the world. The biggest Whale Sharks’ gathering was recorded in 2011 with more than 400 individuals off the Yucatan coast!

    Growth & Reproduction

At this point, the whale shark is still poorly understood but few studies indicated an estimation of 80 to 130 years lifespan of each individual. This is, again, a great record for this beautiful marine species! In 1996, a pregnant female has been reported bearing 300 pups, this indicates that the whale shark is ovoviviparous and that the females keep sperm and produce a steady stream of pups over a prolonged period. Amazing sustainable way of doing!
Unfortunately, it is considered as an endangered species due to the impact of fisheries, its long lifespan and late maturation.

    Human & Whale Shark relationship

These gentle giants can be encountered in many spots in Indonesia. It is believed that local fishermen and Whale sharks can sometimes create a special bond and a unique relationship. In few regions of Indonesia, the majestic animal is considered as an omen of good fortune and fishermen share their baitfish or their catch of small sardines with the large animals. Even if it's an exiting activity, while Snorkeling or Diving with Whale Sharks you have to remember some basic rules: Don't Touch, Don't Approach too fast, Be Nice and enjoy the show.
