  • What is a Pelagic?

Komodo National Park is the home or visited by many large pelagic fish, but what does Pelagic fish means?

Pelagic fish live in the open sea quite far from shores. Those species are living and feeding away from the bottom of the ocean. They differ from demersal & benthic species that live on or near the bottom or reef.

Why big fishes live in this area?

Komodo is the only equatorial region on the planet where two oceans, the Pacific and the Indian, meet and exchange marine life, generating strong tidal flow running North and South through the park bringing much-needed nutrients. These currents help dispersing plankton between the two oceans and many planktons settle in the Komodo Area and thereby causing a very high-biodiversity of corals, reef fish, invertebrates, and pelagic. This Oceanic hub attracts bigger marine life and mammals, some of which also use the channels as natural migratory highways.
