Arborek is a tiny island in the Raja Ampat archipelago, at the end of Dampier Strait, on West Papua, with a magnificent dive site located on its main jetty, on the North side of the island. Although Arborek village may be better known as a stop to see the culture of a local village in Raja Ampat, this pier is famous for its beautiful underwater views, making diving and snorkeling in this area definitely worthwhile. Arborek is one of the 3 main Jetties in Raja Ampat.

    Abundant Fauna

Underneath the short jetty you will find massive schools of fish which you can get completely lost in, you can quickly get into large schools of sweetlips and jack mackerels hunting on the smaller silversides. You can also find cuttlefish among coral formations and both electric and giant clams are found to one side of the jetty. Thick coral gardens have become shelters for pipefish, snappers, surgeonfish, bump head parrotfish, angelfish, barracudas, tuna, and batfish. And if you are one of those people who are in the right place at the right time, you may even see giant oceanic manta rays and even wobbegongs.

A Lot of Life Below the Jetty

    Conditions & Topography

Good underwater visibility makes this place a very popular site for underwater photographers wishing to photograph the pier pilings covered with colourful soft coral and the good macro life living under the pier and on the spread of the bommies further down the slope. This can make the site a little crowded at times, however, this shouldn’t be an issue at all, given that the selection of critters and vibrant coral is absolutely great. Some species you will encounter are octopus, hermit crabs and shrimps, camouflaged frogfish, many nudibranchs of every colour and swirls of schooling fish. Keep your eyes wide open to find Pontohi and Severns pygmy seahorses.

    A Bicolor Flatworm

    Kind of Dive

If you want to dive a little bit further, you can take a traditional motor boat to reach the dive sites that are only 10-15 minutes away. Enjoy this marine paradise with incredible hard and soft corals and plenty of beautiful and bright fish such as fusiliers, butterflyfish, barracudas and damsels congregating on the reef flats. Trevallies, mackerels and tunas can be found a little further into the deep. And let’s not forget about reef sharks and dugongs.

Sometimes there is very little current on Arborek, however, on occasions strong currents can be experienced near Arborek island, making it a challenging dive and better suitable for experienced divers with currents.

    Pontoh

Snorkeling, Night dive & authentic culture

Snorkeling is quite extraordinary and it is possible from anywhere on the island. At the pier, you can just jump into the water and go snorkeling there, you will instantly find a fascinating illumination of the glittering of a gorgonian fan just below the surface. The waters just off the beach are very shallow so be careful when swimming over coral.

Arborek Jetty is also perfect for night dives, when divers can see oyster toadfish croaking in search of a blue-ringed octopus. Be careful and aware of lionfish though.

There’s no other site like Arborek, not only you will enjoy a splendid dive, but you will also be able to appreciate this picturesque village and learn a bit of their culture. Visitors are more than welcome into this little paradise.
