Mike's Point

A unique dive site, bombed during the WWII

Mike
  • In the middle of Dampier Strait

Mike’s Point is a fascinating and popular dive site, located in the Eastern tip of Kerupiar island, just off the South-East coast of Gam, almost smack in the middle of the Dampier Strait.

Given its history, this unique area differs from the others. During the Second World War, the U.S. Air Force confused the area with a Japanese ship and bombed it, leaving the topography very different from the rest of the archipelago. The impacts have created an unusual rock formation with grooves in the wall, sort of like caves, where you can now dive. This has been fortuitous for the dive site, since now is a perfect spot for critters to hide within their dark crevices. This is the reason why this dive site is one of the most popular dive sites in Raja Ampat, the incredible marine life inhabiting the slopes and plateau.

    Big diversity of Pelagic

At Mike’s Point, there are always larger fish passing by, such as whitetip and blacktip sharks, eagle rays, green turtles, sea snakes, schools of barracudas, Napoleon wrasse, huge bump head parrotfish. The famous wobbegong sharks can also be found here. In some of the small caves and crevices you will encounter many yellow striped sweetlips or tunas. On most dives, Spanish Mackerel, fusiliers, jacks, moray eels, snapper, butterfly fish, cardinal, angelfish, anthias and many other types of reef fish make an appearance. And if you are very lucky, you can even see large silver tip sharks. The wall is very attractive to fish as well, with large pelagic fish in abundance. It is also covered with an abundance of soft corals, huge black corals, soft corals, giant gorgonians and sponges. You will find amazing finger corals, sea whips and anemones. It is a great spot for fish portraits and coral photography.

    Angelfish Pomacanthus Xanthometopon

    Many other species & Macro

But not everything is on the ocean floor; on the Southern side of the shallow plateau there is a superb hard coral garden and gorgonian fan garden, where you can find sea serpents, turtles, carpet sharks or walking fish. It is also a tremendous place to do your safety stop. Given the crevices and overhangs, macro diving is also excellent, so divers can expect to spot an array of macro subjects, such as nudibranchs, pygmy seashores, mantis shrimps, scorpion fish, crabs and more.

    Dive plan & Conditions

The Eastern and Southern flanks of the island are where the rich currents of the Dampier Strait have worked their magic, however this undoubtable excellent dive needs to be carefully planned due to the strength of these currents, which can sometimes turn downwards due to the speed. Besides, at Mike’s Point you can descend up to more than 30 meters, so an experienced level for this dive site is definitely required.

Mike’s Point is very recommendable when visiting Raja Ampat, as is an unpredictable dive site offering a remarkably recovered reef, with fantastic corals, a swim-through cave at 9 meters and some seriously strong currents drawing many fish.  The average water temperature of the site varies between 26 to 30 Celsius degrees and you can dive in here all year long.
